Woodburn Homecoming was started as far as we can find in 1923. That year it was called One Big Day and was for the benefit of the park. In 1924 it was called Community Home Coming. At first Homecoming was celebrated for two days, then later it went to a one-day celebration. They used to have a large carnival come to town and set up. Before that, the 4th of July was celebrated. At first Homecoming was celebrated for two days, then later it went to a one-day celebration with a few activities the Friday night before, and the main celebration on Saturday with a parade, a small carnival and activities all day. On Sunday there would be a horse or tractor pull in the afternoon. In the 1930’s the Hatcher Players would come and put on tent shows. They charged 10 cents admission. Once you got in, they would keep charging another 10 cents to get a better seat. Part of their act was “Cliff Carl and Comedians”. Cliff would join in with the Woodburn Band and play saxophone. He later went on to have a show at WHO radio.
In the Methodist Church history, the ladies have recorded that in 1937, 25 cents was charged for a dinner consisting of creamed chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, sliced tomatoes, and pie.
There was always a parade, and earlier years, the Woodburn band performed. Dances and skits, games and races for kids and adults were part of the fun.
